FUA HOSTS SUNY SOUTHAMPTON IN FLORENCE
Stony Brook Southampton and Florence University of the Arts: 'A Writer Conference', January 2011.
Florence University of the Arts was the co-host of the winter edition of Stony Brook University's annual Southampton Writer's Conference. The collaboration between FUA and Stony Brook Southampton provided a forum for authors of all genres to study and discuss the craft of writing, through workshops, lectures, group-discussions and readings.
In the morning students partipated in courses led by Stony Brook faculty members and professional writers, Ursula Heigi and Matt Klam. In the afternoon, workshops based on the topics of Florentine authors and food writing were held by FUA faculty and prominent Italian writers and poets. Guided visits and excursions throughout the city and the region of Tuscany completed the conference, allowing students to experience and witness both contemporary and historic sights of cultural-literary importance. Topics covered included the city of Florence and its narrative, facts and myths of Florentine gastronomy created through literature, and the Grand Tour of Italy. Amongst others, the works of Goethe, Dickens, Mark Twain, David Leavitt and Italo Calvino were studied and discussed. The conference ended with a presentation of the student's work in the renaissance building Palazzo Bombicci Guicciardini Strozzi, one of FUA's main campuses.
